Based upon our class discussion, answer the following questions in AT LEAST a paragraph each:

1.   Why do you think some Americans are uninformed about the rest of the world?

2.   What are the consequences of that?

  1. 1. I think some Americans are uninformed about the rest of the world because they are simply too busy and do not think it effects them. When I watched the countries parade in for the Olympics I was shocked to see how many I had never heard of. When I pulled out the free map of the world I have in my room to find Laos, I was able to find it quickly (thanks to the cartoon character telling me it was land locked next to Vietnam)- but, must admit I had never heard of Laos. I saw on the news today that there was a big explosion at an oil refinery and suspect that will increase the cost of food and fuel here. I am hoping to learn more about the countries and the world during this class.

2.. The consequences of not knowing about the rest of the world is that we may not act in a way that helps us all. For instance, if we did not know about Global warming and the way it is impacting the world we may not have begun to "go green" to try and stop it. Apple Computer is trying to be more "green" and be sure that the people making its parts are fairly paid. This makes Apple a better company in my opinion. To take care of the world and each other it is necessary to stay informed.

I think that some Americans are so uninformed about the rest of the world because they choose to be. All they care about is themselves and what they do. If they really wanted to find out what is going on around the world they could. With the technology these day’s people can find out anything. So why some people choose not to search the rest of the world is completely beyond me. There is so much more to learn about the world and some people just completely ignore it.

The consequences of this are simple. Not knowing what is going on around the world is ignorant. There is way too much stuff going on in the world right now for some people to not have a clue as to what is happening. News is everywhere you go and some people choose to not pay attention to it. You are only hurting yourself and showing how self centered you are if you do not know what is happening around the world. You are just making yourself look like a fool.

  5. 1. I think some Americans are so uniformed about the rest of the workd, is because they choose to be. They are self centered and only care about what effects them. They don't want to know about problems in other countries, and how they could help. We only have one world, so we need to work together to keep it.

    2. People do not realize that "what happens here, matters there" and "what happens there, matters here", like the economy. You also need to be informed so you can protect your country and the world. It is ignorant to be so uniformed. If there was an global emergency, how would you know?

  6. 1. I believe most people are uninformed about the rest of the world simply because they don't care. I believe that most American are in there own little world and believe that what happens out of this won't affect them, when in reality every little thing is important.

    2. Not knowing what is happening in the rest of the world can effect you whether you realize it or not. Two big things that are happening right now is the price of oil and gas, and war. As oil is getting harder and more expensive to find the price goes up. Not only does it hurt people outside of our social chain but eventually it will start to hurt our every day life.

    1. Most people dont know anything about the rest of the world because they either dont care to know anything about the world or they just dont have the technology to keep up with the rest of the world and it is kind of a shame because there is so much to learn from the rest of the world.

    2. Some consequences for not knowing anything about the rest of the world is that people are missing out on the rest of the world because there is a lot of information on the rest of the world and people learn about that but some people just dont care about the rest of the world because people are selfish and if it doesnt concern them, then they dont care about it and it is kind of a bad attitude but people act like this.

  8. 1. I believe that most Americans are uninformed about the world, because their too busy with jobs and families, and they don't have the time to keep up with everything that's in the news. I don't think that ALL Americans don't care about what's going on. Some Americans do, but they have other things on their mind. Also, we don't understand why certain things happen, because things are a lot more different here. Having a democracy makes us different from other countries, so it may be hard to understand certain conflicts, like dictators not ruling fairly.

    2. The consequences of not being aware of whats happening in the rest of the world, is that people are missing out on information and education. It's no secret that watching the news can be a very academic learning process. Also, a lot of families are sending members out to other countries in war, so it's good to be supportive and keep up on that. Also, when stuff goes from bad to worse, and then it's all over the news, you'll be confused on whats going on, because you never knew what was happening in the first place. So, it's always good to try to keep yourself informed.

  10. 1. I think americans have no idea what is going on around the world for one reason, most countries or events outside of our country do not directly effect us. Let's do an example, in 1996 there was a mass genocide in Rwanda between two tribes in the country. I do not remember the names of those tribes but I know the tribe with all of the weapons abolished the tribe to nothing. But we have an attempt genocide made by Nazi Germany that everybody in the country knows about it basically because it was a big thing during WW2, which we directly effected by.

    2. This could be a problem because, if something serious happens that we were not directly effected by right away, we would be screwed because we would never see it coming. This happened in 911, and Pearl Harbor and really, if we had payed attention to the outside world, we would have seen it coming.
